Portland gets about 43 inches of rain a year, and almost none of it arrives in a hurry. It comes as drizzle from October to May, day after day, which means a gutter here is wet for eight months straight. That does two things a Texas or Florida gutter never deals with. It grows moss — thick, sponge-like mats along the back edge and around outlets — and it turns every fir needle that lands in the trough into a slow-draining felt that holds water against the fascia.
The second Portland problem is the housing stock. Laurelhurst, Irvington, Sellwood, Alberta and the streets around Mt. Tabor are full of 1920s–40s craftsman bungalows and Tudors, many still carrying their original half-round gutters or a K-style that was hung in the 1970s. The fascia behind those gutters is old-growth fir, and it is often the last solid wood on the house — until a moss-choked gutter soaks it for a few winters.

How much does gutter repair cost in Portland?
Most repairs run $150 to $600. Resealing a corner, re-hanging a sagging 20-foot run or replacing a crushed downspout sits at the low end. What do seamless gutters cost in Portland, Oregon?
Seamless aluminum installed runs about $11 to $18 per linear foot here, a bit above the national range because of labor costs and the steep, cut-up roofs in the West Hills. A single-story bungalow with 150 feet of gutter and four downspouts is typically $1,700–$2,700; a two-story home is $2,600–$4,200.
How often should gutters be cleaned in Portland?
Twice a year is standard: once in late October or November after the bigleaf maples drop, and once in spring after the fir needles and cherry blossoms are done. Homes directly under Douglas fir often need a third visit, because needles fall year-round and mat at the outlets.
Can moss actually damage a gutter?
Yes. Moss holds water like a sponge, so the gutter and fascia behind it stay wet all winter. It also blocks outlets and traps needles. On a roof, moss lifts shingles and holds water under them. We remove it from the gutters by hand and can treat the roof edge so it is slow to return.
Are you licensed?
Oregon requires anyone doing construction work on a home for pay to hold a Construction Contractors Board (CCB) license, which means a bond and liability insurance on file with the state. We carry it, and you can look up any contractor's number on the CCB website before you hire them. If a company will not give you a number, that is your answer.
Do you work on half-round gutters?
Yes, and we think they belong on a craftsman house. We repair original half-round systems, replace them with new half-round in aluminum, galvanized or copper, and size the outlets properly — small outlets are the usual reason an old half-round overflows.
